Hao Y, Liu Z, Riter RN, Kalantari S. Advancing Patient-Centered Shared Decision-Making with AI Systems for Older Adult Cancer Patients. CHI '24: Proceedings of the 2024 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. 2024; Article No. 437:1-20. https://doi.org/10.1145/3613904.3642353

Summary: This study explores the development of an AI system designed to enhance shared decision-making (SDM) for older adult cancer patients, particularly those with lower health literacy. The AI system aims to support patients in understanding treatment outcomes and becoming more actively involved in their care decisions. A pilot study involving 12 preliminary interviews and 25 usability tests with cancer survivors and clinicians demonstrated the system's potential to improve personalized healthcare experiences and patient education. Clinicians also provided insights into how AI could further enhance SDM by reducing medical errors and improving clinical efficiency.
