Marijan D, Sen S. Industry–Academia Research Collaboration and Knowledge Co-creation: Patterns and Anti-patterns. ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology (TOSEM). 2022;31(3): Article No. 45:1-52. https://doi.org/10.1145/3494519

Summary: This article explores industry–academia collaboration in software engineering, focusing on knowledge co-creation and overcoming barriers such as research disconnected from real-world applications. Drawing from 14 years of collaboration with the European and Norwegian software industry, the authors collected qualitative data through participant observation and interviews. They present 14 patterns and 14 anti-patterns that offer practical guidance for improving research-practice collaborations. These findings are intended to help researchers and practitioners enhance the impact and effectiveness of software engineering collaborations.
