This article examines the application of natural language processing (NLP) to veterinary clinical records to enhance disease surveillance. It focuses on the lexical structure of these records and the use of keyword-based filtering and rule-based pattern matching. The strengths and limitations of these traditional methods are discussed, particularly in terms of their impact on the efficiency of information retrieval. The article sets the foundation for part two, which explores the integration of machine learning for automated information extraction.
